In 1839, Jane, Lady Franklin — wife of Tasmania's Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin — did something almost no colonial woman of her time did: she set out from Hobart to Port Phillip, then overland from Melbourne to Sydney, travelling through country few Europeans had crossed. It scandalised polite society and cemented her reputation as one of the most restless, ambitious women in Australian colonial history.
This Errant Lady, edited by historian Penny Russell, brings together Jane Franklin's own journal and letters from that journey, with Russell's introduction placing the trip in the context of Franklin's extraordinary life and the position of women in Van Diemen's Land society.
