Risby Brothers Timber Merchants was founded in Hobart in 1844 by Joseph Risby, and remained in family hands until it closed in the early 1990s — one of Tasmania's longest-running family-owned businesses. The company expanded across the state over the following century, with bush mills in the Derwent Valley and, from around 1889, a sawmilling branch established by Charles Wallace Risby at Strahan on the West Coast — supplying Huon pine for the Strahan Wharf extension and, by the turn of the century, pylon contracts to major ports in Britain and Scotland.
This wide-ranging history follows the Risby family and their timber business across five generations, from 1826 to 1995.
