Half a Lifetime - 39 Years in Forestry in Tasmania, by North-East historian Garry Richardson | Foreword by Bob Gordon, Forestry Tasmania | 2009 [USED – SC]

Garry Richardson was born in the Huon Valley in 1950 and joined the Tasmanian Forestry Commission straight from school. Over 39 years he rose from an inexperienced young trainee technical forester to an experienced practitioner who acted as reviewer and mentor during the introduction of the state's Forest Practices Code — a career spanning enormous change in how Tasmania managed its forests. This is his own account, full of anecdotes reflecting the range of skills and life experience gathered across a forestry career, and the friendships built with colleagues across the wider forest sector. The foreword is written by Bob Gordon, then Managing Director of Forestry Tasmania.

After retiring in 2005, Richardson settled in St Helens — which he calls "the best place in the world" — and became one of North-East Tasmania's most respected local historians and photographers. This, his first book, was followed by Tin Mountain (2013), Sail and Steam (2014), Lottah and the Anchor (2016), Up Country (also in our stock — see Related Products), The Harbour, The Bay: The European History of St Helens, and Safe Passage: The Lighthouses of Tasmania.
