Gold was discovered in the tributaries of the Pieman River from the late 1870s, and the boomtown of Corinna sprang up at a key river crossing point, becoming a jumping-off point for prospectors pushing on to Mount Heemskirk, Zeehan and Mount Lyell. At its 1880s peak Corinna held some 2,500 people and two rival hotels, and gained a reputation as one of the roughest towns in Tasmania. In 1883, the largest gold nugget ever found in Tasmania — 7.5kg — was unearthed at Rocky River, a tributary near Corinna. Hans Julen tells this history in detail.
