Rosebery was founded after prospector Tom McDonald discovered gold and zinc-lead ore on the slopes of Mount Black in 1893, in the shadow of Mount Murchison on Tasmania's west coast. Early lead smelting proved commercially difficult due to the ore's high zinc content, and mining didn't become continuously profitable until new processing methods allowed the mine to reopen in 1936. Published to mark the settlement's centenary, this book by Geof Jay looks at aspects of Rosebery's first hundred years, 1893–1993.
