Alasdair McGregor's biography of Frank Hurley — one of Australia's most celebrated photographers, and one of the most extraordinary of any era.

Hurley accompanied Douglas Mawson on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–14, producing the first significant photographic record of Australian Antarctic exploration. He then joined Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated Endurance expedition of 1914–17 — when the ship was crushed by pack ice, Hurley salvaged his glass plate negatives from the freezing water, producing some of the most iconic images in the history of photography. He went on to document the Western Front in WWI and the Middle East and Pacific campaigns in WWII.

McGregor's biography at 460 pages is the most thorough account of Hurley's life — covering the full arc from his early commercial work in Sydney through the Antarctic expeditions, the wars and his later documentary film work.
