Patsy Adam-Smith collects the stories and traditions of Australia's railway workers — a subject close to her own upbringing as the child of Victorian railway workers, and one she returned to throughout her writing career. This was one of her earliest books, published not long after she left Hobart, where she had lived and worked from 1960 to 1967 and where she first began writing seriously.
