Parattah - Junction Town of the Southern Midlands, 150 Years of Railway History | Steven Figg | 2025 [NEW – SC]

Parattah, in Tasmania's Southern Midlands, grew up as a railway town on the Main Line between Hobart and Launceston, which opened through the area in 1876. Confusingly, the station was originally named "Oatlands Station," since it was as close as the line came to the actual town of Oatlands, before being renamed Parattah in 1882. From 1885, when a branch line to Oatlands opened, it became known as Parattah Junction — the halfway stopping point on the Hobart–Launceston line, complete with a coaling stage, water refilling station and a wye for turning locomotives, and today still the highest-elevation station on the Tasmanian rail network. Its refreshment rooms were once famously known for "cool tea and warm beer." A local farmhouse was also once home to Hudson Fysh, co-founder of Qantas. Steven Figg tells the town's story here in pictures across its 150-year history.
