This 2002 collection brings together eighteen essays of Tasmanian historical research by Lindsay Whitham, grouped around the state's railways, mines, tramways and the people behind them. The West Coast section covers the railways and tramways of Zeehan, the town's contested reputation for twenty-six hotels, and water power and communications on the South Heemskirk tin field.
A section on collieries covers the Sandfly Coal Mine, and the Catamaran and Dalmayne collieries and their transport systems. Further essays trace T-rail in Tasmania, the Latrobe Wharf Railway, the bridges, roads and rails of Bridgewater, and the Red Gate Tramway to Waddamana, alongside shorter pieces on a horse-driven pump, a historic clinometer and the Perth suspension bridge.
The biographical section profiles R.W. Lord, first manager of the Tasmanian Government Railways, the Robeys of South Maria, and writer Charles Whitham - author of Eight from Hindustan and, separately, Western Tasmania: A Land of Riches and Beauty.
