Patsy Adam-Smith and John Powell survey the 42 islands of the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait — the largest of which, Flinders Island, was where Tasmania's last free Aboriginal people were relocated in the 1830s. Adam-Smith drew on her own years living and working among the region's mutton-birding and small-boat trading communities, later the subject of her better-known books Moonbird People and There Was a Ship.
