The first eighteen years of European settlement in Van Diemen's Land were a period of extraordinary lawlessness — convicts absconding into the bush, escaped bushrangers preying on settlers, and an administration struggling to impose order on a remote and barely mapped island. Graeme-Evans documents some of the individuals — who they were, what they did, and how they met their ends.
