From his arrival in Van Diemen's Land in 1833, Dr Edward Swarbreck Hall clashed with his fellow medical practitioners, administrators, politicians and clergy. As a doctor he stood up for convicts, agitated for protection of the general public from infectious diseases and defended Catholics and Catholicism from sectarian attacks. \
