Stock Thieves and Golfers follows the social history of Kangaroo Bay and Bellerive, on Hobart's eastern shore, from 1803 to 1998. Peter MacFie opens with the stock theft networks and black-market dealings run by convict-era settler Richard Morgan's family, and covers former Norfolk Island settlers and Derwent River ferrymen, before tracing Rosny Farm's ownership through to its purchase by the Royal Hobart Golf Club during the First World War and the lives of the club's greenkeepers. It also follows the eastern shore's shift from farms to beachside shacks and then suburbs, a change tied to the floating bridge's completion in 1944.
