Kate Julia Cowle (1863–1916), a Fingal-born pianist and amateur botanist, is recorded as the first European woman to summit Cradle Mountain, climbing it in January 1910 alongside her husband Gustav Weindorfer. Kate used her own inheritance to help purchase the Cradle Valley land on which the couple built Waldheim, their timber "forest home," opened to guests in 1913.
