The definitive reference on early European domestic architecture in northern Tasmania, written by E. Graeme Robertson and Edith N. Craig and published by Georgian House, Melbourne in 1964. Together the two volumes document the houses, homesteads and farm buildings constructed by early settlers across the north of the island, with 264 black and white photographic plates and 8 itinerary maps covering properties by district.
This is a numbered limited edition set — number 858 of 1000 copies produced. Volume I is signed by both authors. These books have been out of print since the 1960s and rarely found as a complete signed numbered set.
Robertson and Craig produced a companion work covering southern Tasmania, and together the two sets constitute the most thorough documentation of colonial domestic architecture in Tasmania ever undertaken. The northern set in particular covers the Midlands, Tamar Valley, Launceston district and surrounding areas — the heartland of Tasmania's pastoral and colonial heritage.
A useful reference if you're researching a specific northern Tasmanian property, tracing family history connected to the colonial pastoral period, or collecting significant works on Tasmanian heritage and architecture.
