Known as the "gateway to the highlands" for its position at the edge of the Central Plateau, Bothwell retains around 60 buildings and sites of historic significance, and holds the Australasian Golf Museum, home to a claim to the oldest continuously running golf course in Australasia, established at Ratho Farm in the 1820s by settler Alexander Reid. The Irish patriot John Mitchel spent time here, and radio astronomy pioneer Grote Reber later lived and worked nearby at Dennistoun.

The most comprehensive account of the Matthew Brady gang and associated bushrangers active in Van Diemen's Land between 1824 and 1827, drawn from James Calder's original 1873 text together with newly discovered manuscripts, edited by Eustace Fitzsymonds and published by Sullivan's Cove, Hobart in 1979.

Derby, in Tasmania's North-East, began life as "Brothers' Home" — the name given to the settlement that grew around the Krushka brothers' tin mine, discovered in 1876. Renamed Derby in 1887, the town grew to over 3,000 people at its mining peak, with the Briseis Mine becoming one of the richest tin mines in the world.
