Low Head to Launceston - earliest reports of Port Dalrymple and the Tamar

Presents the earliest surviving written accounts of the exploration and founding of Port Dalrymple and the Tamar, at the mouth of which the site of modern Launceston developed.

On the evening of 3 November 1798, Matthew Flinders and George Bass entered Port Dalrymple aboard the colonial sloop Norfolk, becoming the first Europeans to survey the harbour. French explorers Louis de Freycinet and Charles-Alexandre Faure, part of Nicolas Baudin's expedition, followed in 1802. William Collins, Thomas Clark and Robert Brown surveyed further in January 1804, and in November and December 1804, Lieutenant-Colonel William Paterson led the official party that founded the settlement — with a separate account also included from surgeon John Mountgarrett.

Each account is introduced and annotated for modern readers, with the track of each vessel plotted on contemporary charts and specially drawn maps.
