Heroes and Villains tells two very different life stories that converged on the same ship to Hobart. Peter Degraves' section traces his rise as an industrialist, his "sins of the father," his bankruptcy and conviction as a burglar, and his subsequent exile in the Scottish highlands. Major Hugh Macintosh's section is a separate military adventure: his time as an East India Company cadet, service in Madras and Mysore, the Siege of Seringapatam, his marriage, his involvement in a mutiny, and later service to the Shah. The two men's paths meet in the book's third section, aboard the colonial ship Hope, bound for Hobart, where Degraves went on to found Cascade Brewery — today Australia's oldest brewery. Includes an appendix on the lost treasures of Bruny Island.
