From the Proteus to Prosperity – In the Steps of John Walduck (1809–1886): A Convict Family History | Susan G. Scott (Ed.) | 2018 [USED – HCDJ – Very Good]

The seven-generation family history of the Walduck family of Tasmania, tracing their origins from convict John Walduck who arrived in Van Diemen's Land aboard the Proteus on 3 August 1831, having sailed from Portsmouth on 14 April. Walduck was born in 1809 and lived until 1886 — long enough to see his descendants established as free settlers across the colony.

Compiled and edited by Susan G. Scott after a decade of research by a team of Walduck family members, the book draws on letters, photographs, records and personal accounts passed down through the family to trace seven generations of Australian life — from John Walduck's arrival as a transported convict through to the family's prosperity and spread across Tasmania and beyond.

At 382 pages, this is a substantial and thoroughly researched family history, published in 2018. Of direct interest to descendants of the Walduck family and to anyone researching convict ancestry arriving in Van Diemen's Land in 1831 or the broader history of Tasmanian colonial families.
