A history of the Longford circuit in northern Tasmania — once Australasia's fastest road racing circuit. Written by Barry Green, the book tells the story of a brief but unforgettable era from 1953 to 1968, when world champion drivers in works Formula One cars and factory motorcycle teams came to challenge the circuit's unique features against the best Australasia could offer.
Longford was a genuine road circuit — run through the town on public roads, including a railway level crossing and a bridge, rather than a purpose-built track — which made it one of the most demanding and dangerous circuits drivers of the era encountered anywhere in the world. The era ended in 1968 and the circuit was never used for major racing again, making this a record of a period in Tasmanian sporting history that can't be repeated.
This is a thorough account of the meetings, the drivers and riders, and the town that hosted them.
