Down Wapping - Hobart's vanished Wapping and Old Wharf districts

(0 reviews)

Wapping was a working class residential district which lay on either side of the Hobart Rivulet. The district's economy was dominated by the casual labour trades associated with the waterfront trades and industries located on nearby Old Wharf and along the banks of the rivulet - fishing, seafaring, wharf labour and cartage, slaughtering, and jam, soap and gas factories.

Wapping was in the latter half of the 19th century widely regarded by Hobart's upper crust as the city's worst slum. This history looks beyond the stereotype and into the reality of what was once Wapping.
