Marjorie Tipping's history of the convicts transported to Australia on the ship Calcutta in 1803 — one of the earliest convict transports, carrying 299 convicts who were originally destined for Botany Bay but landed instead at Sullivan's Cove, becoming among the first European settlers in Van Diemen's Land.

Tipping traces the individual stories of the Calcutta convicts — who served their time, who reoffended, who prospered, and what became of them and their descendants in the Australian colonies.

At 353 pages with an index, it is a detailed piece of research drawing on convict records, muster rolls and other primary sources.
