Convicts at Sea is an account of the voyages which carried some 10,223 convicts, tried in Ireland, to Van Diemen's Land between the years 1840-1853. The numbers of Irish men and women sent to the colony were enlarged following the cessation of transportation to New South Wales in 1840. From 1846 the Great Famine in Ireland caused a vastly increased number of convictions and prison authorities were under great pressure to remove the offenders. Over the 13 years, there was a notable change in the attitude of the Irish convicts to their fate - their early apprehension gave way to a view of transportation as a cheap means of migration.
