Covers early exploration by Bass and Flinders, the founding of the Van Diemen's Land Company and its first chief agent Edward Curr, the Company's surveyors and difficult early years, and the stories of local families including the Boyes Kays, Bill Rainbird, the Holymans of Trefoil Island, the Nichols family, and the Luck family, alongside chapters on mutton-birding and farming life in the district.
