George Robinson sailed from Leith as a steerage passenger on the Triton, reaching Hobart Town in January 1824, and worked there as a builder in the years before he became known — and, in the longer view of history, increasingly contested — as Van Diemen's Land's Protector of Aborigines. This is a paper by Tasmanian historical author NJB Plomley, drawing primarily on Robinson's own diary, considering his immigration experience before that later role began.
