Christopher Cowles, former Studio Head of Graphic Design at the Tasmanian School of Art, and David Walker, a professional photographer and librarian at the Tasmanian Archives and Heritage Office, spent 15 years researching this study of the paper labels once pasted onto wooden apple crates for export, at a time when Tasmania was known internationally as "the Apple Isle." These vividly designed labels — now a recognised and sought-after form of "industrial folk art," with individual surviving examples fetching thousands of dollars among overseas collectors, particularly in the US — were often the first image people abroad ever saw of Australia.

The book won the University of Tasmania Prize at the Tasmanian Literary Awards, and incorporates a complete guide to Australian apple case labels.
