Oatlands, established in 1821 and named by Governor Macquarie after a town in Surrey, England, holds Australia's largest collection of Georgian sandstone buildings in a village setting, much of it built with convict labour quarried locally from around Lake Dulverton. Its landmarks include the Callington Mill (1837), the only working windmill of its type in the Southern Hemisphere; Australia's oldest rural supreme court house (1829); and the 1835–37 Oatlands Gaol, designed by Colonial Architect John Lee Archer — also covered in our biography of Archer, in stock — which could hold up to 270 prisoners and was the site of 18 executions, most infamously carried out by the colony's hangman, Solomon Blay. Nearby Jericho, one of Tasmania's oldest townships, dating from 1816, takes its biblical name from a local rock formation known as "The Wall of Jericho," and was also the site of an early convict probation station.
