Eva Meidl's account of the voyage of the Hannah — the ship that sailed from Liverpool in November 1850 carrying German and British free settlers to Van Diemen's Land, arriving in Launceston in March 1851.
Among the passengers on the Hannah was Ludwig Becker — German artist, naturalist and explorer. Becker spent nearly two years in Van Diemen's Land after arrival, making his living painting portrait miniatures and pursuing his scientific interests in botany, zoology and geology. Lady Denison, wife of Governor Sir William Denison, described him as "one of those universal geniuses who can do anything." He later became artist and naturalist on the Burke and Wills Expedition, where he died near Cooper's Creek in April 1861.
The book documents the Hannah's voyage and the passengers who made it — their origins, their reasons for emigrating, and what became of them in the colony of Van Diemen's Land. It draws on family histories and archival sources to give individual stories to a group of settlers who might otherwise be a bare list of names in a passenger manifest.
At 159 pages with some colour and black and white illustrations, this is a useful reference for family historians researching German or British settler ancestry arriving in Van Diemen's Land in the early 1850s.
