Not long after the first motorcars reached Tasmania, people began modifying chassis and fitting commercial bodies to create the state's first working trucks. Trucks soon linked up with the ships at port and the trains running the length of the state, carting rock and machinery for the mines of the west coast, hauling apples from the Huon to Sullivans Cove, and moving goods from factories to city retail stores.
L.J. Morley traces this history from the earliest Tasmanian trucks of 1909 through to 1970, covering the Public Works Department's early vehicles, Hobart's fire engines, steam-powered Sentinel waggons, the trucks of Mount Lyell, apple trucks, wartime army vehicles, and the trucking firms - among them Reynolds Bros and Elliott Bros - who kept Tasmania moving. The book is illustrated throughout with hundreds of historical photographs.
