The correspondence of James Backhouse Walker to his sister Mary in London over four years from 1889 to 1892, edited by Margaret Glover and published in 2015.
Walker was one of Hobart's most prominent lawyers and a noted historian of Van Diemen's Land — his historical papers on early Tasmania remain among the most cited sources in Tasmanian colonial history. His letters to Mary give a candid, intelligent observer's view of Hobart society in the late 19th century — the politics, the personalities, the social life, and the issues that occupied educated Hobart at a time when the colony was transitioning to full self-government and grappling with its convict past.
At 421 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout and a full index, this is a substantial piece of primary source social history — useful for researchers of late colonial Tasmania and for anyone interested in the texture of daily life in Hobart in this period.
