In 1839, Jane, Lady Franklin — wife of Tasmania's Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin — did something almost no colonial woman of her time did: she set out from Hobart to Port Phillip, then overland from Melbourne to Sydney, travelling through country few Europeans had crossed.

The Tasmanian journal of William Smith O'Brien, covering his years as a political exile in Van Diemen's Land from 1849 to 1853. Edited by Richard Davis and published in 1995 as a limited first edition of 500 numbered copies. O'Brien was one of the most prominent figures in the Young Ireland movement — a Protestant Irish nationalist and Member of the Westminster Parliament who led the failed 1848 rebellion against British rule.

An English translation of Jules Dumont d'Urville's accounts of his two great South Seas voyages — the Astrolabe voyage of 1826–1829 and the Zélée voyage of 1837–1840 — published by Melbourne University Press in 1987 in two volumes with slipcase. D'Urville was one of the most significant French naval explorers of the 19th century.
This award-winning history (Non-Fiction Award, 2004 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature) tells the story of Tasmanian Aboriginal women taken to Kangaroo Island by sealers in the early nineteenth century, the cross-cultural community they formed decades before South Australia's official settlement, and their descendants' ongoing journey to reclaim a heritage many grew up unaware of.
