Villains and Valour traces the Holmyard family from their origins in Britain through transportation to Van Diemen's Land, to their descendants across Tasmania. Hugh Holmyard (1791-1869) was convicted of poaching at the Assizes and transported to the colony, and his story is followed alongside that of Bridget O'Neill, who came from County Tyrone in Ireland by way of Scotland. Author Merlene Fawdry traces the family's convict-era hardships - including time in the Female Factory and House of Correction for Females - through to later generations of Holmyards in the Deloraine and Westbury districts, and includes related family lines such as the Nowells, Reddings, Gadburys, Hamptons, Rayners and Fitzpatricks. The book includes a family tree, family photographs, personal recipes, and appendices drawing on original convict and coronial records.
