Trampled Wilderness - History of South West Tasmania volume two

The Gowllands' account of pioneering endeavour in the far reaches of Tasmania continues here in Volume Two of Trampled Wilderness.

Following the earlier survey work covered in Volume One, this book follows the "Piners" in their search for new stands of Huon Pine, and the mineral prospectors chasing the one valuable claim that might be out there — among them hardy families such as the Longleys and the Judds, who played a significant part in developing the region through the second half of the 19th century. New tracks were surveyed and opened in an effort to reach the South West Coast and Macquarie Harbour, driven partly by a race against time to secure the region before Victorian mainland interests could take control — at one point, even a railway was seriously considered.
