The Student's Flora of Tasmania - the definitive reference work on Tasmania's flowering plants, Parts 1, 2, 3 & 4A | Winifred Curtis | 1956–1979 [USED – HC – 4-Volume Set]

Winifred Curtis (1905–2005), known as the matriarch of Tasmanian botany, began work on this reference at the Tasmanian Government's request in 1943, after being asked to revise Leonard Rodway's earlier, out-of-print Tasmanian Flora. Working largely from fresh specimens she collected herself — reaching remote sites by bus, on foot, and staying in primitive camping huts in national parks during her own holidays — she produced what became the standard identification reference for Tasmania's flowering plants and conifers for nearly forty years, so authoritative among botanists that "check in Curtis" became a common refrain whenever a plant's identity was in question. Curtis was only the second woman appointed to an academic post at the University of Tasmania, later becoming the first woman to head an academic department there.

This set brings together Parts 1 (1956), 2 (1963), 3 (1967) and 4A, on orchids (1979). Part 4B, on monocots, completed the five-part series in 1994, co-authored with her close collaborator Dennis Morris but is not included here.

We also stock The Endemic Flora of Tasmania — Curtis's celebrated six-volume work with botanical artist Margaret Stones — and Aspects of Tasmanian Botany, a tribute to Curtis — see Related Products below. Order two or more titles together and we'll combine postage into one parcel.
