The Last of the Sail Whalers - Whaling off Tasmania & Southern New Zealand SC

When he died in 1938, Captain William McKillop was recognised as probably the last surviving master mariner who had served on board an Australasian sail whaler. This book publishes Captain McKillop's memoirs for the first time, bringing to life the last decades of whaling and seagoing trading voyages under sail in Australasia.

Edited by Rhys Richards and Graeme Broxam, the book covers McKillop's early life and sealing in New Zealand, whaling voyages out of New Zealand and Tasmania aboard vessels including the Waterwitch, Sapphire and Alaska, incidents from his time at sea, profiles of notable Hobart whalemen, a section on whale species, his later years as a merchant mariner, and a biographical appendix with family tree and obituary.
