Henry Savery's satirical sketches of colonial Hobart society, first published in the Hobart Town Gazette in 1829 — edited with a biographical introduction by Cecil Hadgraft and notes on the persons by Margriet Roe, published by University of Queensland Press in 1964.
Savery was a Bristol merchant transported to Van Diemen's Land for forgery in 1825. In Hobart he became a journalist and writer — his novel Quintus Servinton (1830) is widely regarded as the first novel written and published in Australia. The Hermit in Van Diemen's Land preceded it, published as a series of sketches in the Hobart Town Gazette in 1829 — sharp, satirical portraits of colonial society and its pretensions, written by a man who had fallen from considerable social standing and observed his new world with a jaundiced and literary eye.
This 1964 University of Queensland Press edition makes these sketches available with proper scholarly apparatus — Hadgraft's biographical introduction and Roe's identification of the real persons behind Savery's satirical portraits give essential context for a reader approaching colonial Hobart society for the first time.
At 219 pages, this is a significant piece of Australian literary history.
