David Whishaw joined the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War, leaving his family's farm at Carrick, Tasmania to enlist through the Launceston recruiting office soon after his 18th birthday. His father had been a stretcher bearer on the Western Front in the First World War.
Whishaw went on to serve with No. 455 Squadron RAAF — formed in 1941 as part of the "Anzac Strike Wing" — flying first Hampdens and later Beaufighters on operations over the North Sea and along the Norwegian coast, hunting enemy shipping. The squadron worked alongside No. 489 Squadron RNZAF and No. 487 Squadron. Whishaw was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service.
