Robert Wilfred "Bob" Baker (1917–1985) was a Tasmanian lawyer, legal scholar and politician. Born in Adelaide, his family moved to Tasmania in 1919; his father was involved in the founding of the Risdon zinc works, approaching the Tasmanian Government in 1908 about water-power to treat zinc ore — the same story told in our own copy of The Zinc Works, also in stock.
Baker was educated at Hobart High School and gained his law degree from the University of Tasmania in 1939, the same year he won a Rhodes Scholarship to Lincoln College, Oxford. He served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1940 to 1945, returning to Oxford to complete his studies before coming back to Tasmania in 1947 as Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania. He later practised law before entering state politics, serving as the Liberal member for Denison from 1969 to 1980.
