Andrew Inglis Clark (1848–1907) was a Tasmanian lawyer, judge, politician, republican, poet and intellectual, and is regarded as the primary architect of the Australian Constitution. He also co-developed the Hare-Clark proportional representation electoral system, still used in Tasmanian state elections today. This biography by F.M. and L.J. Neasey traces his early life in Van Diemen's Land, his legal and political career, his central role in the 1890s Federal Council and Convention movements that led to Federation, and his work drafting the Constitution itself, with appendices including Clark's own draft Constitution and his memorandum on natural law.
