Softcover Facsimile Edition of the unit history of the 34th Battalion, AIF in the Great War.
Known as "Maitland's Own", the 34th left Sydney May 1916, and spent five months training in the UK before crossing to France in November 1916, entering the trenches for the first time on 27 November — just ahead of the harsh winter of 1916–17. It fought its first major battle at Messines on 7 June 1917, then went into action again around Passchendaele on 12 October 1917 amid deep mud. It spent the following months rotating through rest, training, labour, and front-line service. When Germany launched its Spring Offensive in 1918, the battalion helped defend the approach to Amiens around Villers-Bretonneux, taking part in the counter-attack at Hangard Wood on 30 March and helping defeat the major German drive on Villers-Bretonneux on 4 April. Later in 1918 it took part in the Allied offensive, fighting at Amiens on 8 August, in the subsequent rapid advance, and in the Battle of St Quentin Canal, which breached the Hindenburg Line. The battalion was disbanded in May 1919.
