King Island sits at the treacherous western entrance to Bass Strait, and its shores have claimed more ships than almost anywhere else in Australian waters. The Cataraqui disaster of 1845 remains Australia's worst-ever civil maritime disaster, claiming around 400 lives when the ship struck rocks off the island's coast.
