Nick Anchen's photographic history of the railways of Tasmania's west coast — the extraordinary network of lines that served the mining towns of Queenstown, Rosebery, Zeehan and Strahan, and the remarkable engineering required to build and operate them through some of the most rugged and remote country in Australia.

The west coast railway system was driven by the demands of the mining industry — the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's rack-and-pinion Abt line descending from Queenstown to Strahan through hairpin curves and steep gradients, the Emu Bay Railway running from Burnie into the mineral-rich hinterland, and the various tramways and private lines that served the mines and mills of the region. Many of these lines are now gone; Anchen's photographs and research document what they were before they disappeared.
