The first edition of N.J.B. Plomley's landmark work — the edited journals and papers of George Augustus Robinson covering his time among the Aboriginal peoples of Van Diemen's Land from 1829 to 1834. Robinson was the colonial government's self-appointed "Conciliator" to the Aboriginal population during the Black War period, and his journals are among the most detailed primary source records of that era. Plomley spent years transcribing, editing and annotating them, and when this first edition was published by the Tasmanian Historical Research Association in 1966 it immediately became an essential reference for anyone researching Tasmanian Aboriginal history, the Black War, and colonial frontier relations.
At 1074 pages with B&W illustrations and a full index, it is a substantial scholarly work. The second edition (published 2008) is also sought after; this first edition from 1966 is considerably scarcer and has its own significance as a historical document. No ISBN (predates ISBN system).
