Power in Tasmania examines the political and economic power the Hydro-Electric Commission held in Tasmania at the start of the 1980s. ABC journalist Peter Thompson wrote it in 1981, while working as a project officer for the Australian Conservation Foundation - this book's publisher - during the campaign against hydro-electric development on the Franklin and Gordon Rivers, the same period in which Tasmanians voted in the December 1981 referendum on the Gordon River dam. Thompson later wrote Bob Brown of the Franklin River (1984), a biography of the campaign's best-known figure.
