Pedder Pictorial - a photographic record of the original Lake Pedder, two years before its flooding | Don Stephens | 1970 [USED – Small Booklet – Rare]

Don Stephens, a Mercury staff photographer, produced this small photographic booklet of Lake Pedder in 1970 — just two years before the original lake was destroyed forever. Formed around a million years ago by glacial outwash, the original Lake Pedder was famous for its unique pink quartzite beach, roughly 3km long and up to 1km wide, set among the mountains of Tasmania's remote South-West. Reachable only on foot or by light aircraft landing directly on the beach, it was known mainly to bushwalkers and small tourist groups.

In 1972, the Hydro-Electric Commission dammed the Serpentine and Huon Rivers, flooding the original lake and surrounding wilderness to create today's much larger reservoir of the same name. The campaign to save it — including the mysterious disappearance of activist Brenda Hean in a light aircraft en route to Canberra — is widely credited with starting Australia's modern conservation movement, and led directly to the founding of the United Tasmania Group, the world's first Green political party. Published while the lake could still be visited in its natural state, this booklet is a rare near-contemporary record of what was lost.
