Sir John Franklin in Tasmania 1837–1843 | Kathleen Fitzpatrick | 1949 [USED – HCDJ – Old]
Kathleen Fitzpatrick's scholarly biography of Sir John Franklin's tenure as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1837 to 1843 — published by Melbourne University Press in 1949 and still the standard academic account of Franklin's Tasmanian years. Franklin is better known for his fatal 1845 Arctic expedition searching for the Northwest Passage — the expedition from which neither he nor any of his 128 men returned, and whose fate remained one of the great mysteries of Victorian exploration for over a century. But his six years in Van Diemen's Land as Lieutenant-Governor were also significant.

The Lee family spent generations working this remote country — running cattle on the high plateau in summer, snaring possums through the colder months, and living a way of life that has since largely disappeared.

Some Notes on Maria Island and its Penal Settlements
Maria Island, off Tasmania's east coast, operated as a convict penal settlement from 1825 to 1832 — established to ease overcrowding at Hobart — before closing due to frequent escapes and reopening as a probation station from 1842 to 1850. Darlington, at the island's north, is today regarded as the most intact surviving example of a convict probation station in Australia, and is UNESCO World Heritage-listed as part of the Australian Convict Sites.
