J.S. Cumpston's history of the ships that visited Macquarie Island and the men who sailed them — from the earliest sealers and whalers through the Mawson expeditions and the early ANARE scientific resupply voyages.
Macquarie Island, situated roughly halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica in the Southern Ocean, has been administered by Tasmania since 1900 and is now a World Heritage site. Its remoteness meant that all contact with the outside world came by sea, and the ships that made those voyages — the Janet Ramsay, Clyde, Jessie Nicol, Kakanui, Antarctic, Endeavour and Bellingshausen among others — carried sealers, scientists and supplies to one of the most isolated inhabited places on earth.
At 380 pages with an index and a section of black and white photographs, this is a detailed reference for anyone researching the maritime and scientific history of Macquarie Island, or the ships and men of the southern ocean in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
