Eleanor Alliston's memoir of the years her family spent living on Three Hummock Island — a remote Bass Strait island off Tasmania's north-west coast — in the aftermath of the Second World War. Her husband John Alliston was a British naval officer who had commanded destroyers during the war and transferred to the Royal Australian Navy.
After the war the family made the unconventional decision to settle on Three Hummock Island, one of the more isolated inhabited islands in Bass Strait, where they farmed and lived a largely self-sufficient life far removed from the naval career John had left behind. Eleanor's account covers the practicalities and the unexpected pleasures of island life — the farming, the seasons, the Bass Strait weather, the isolation, and the characters and communities of the Strait.
John Alliston later wrote his own memoir of his naval career, Destroyer Man (1985), which is also available from The Book Cellar.
At 176 pages, this is a warm and readable account of an unusual postwar island life.
