Satirical cartoons on the 1975 Tasman Bridge disaster and its long aftermath, by Kev Bailey — staff political cartoonist for the Mercury for 25 years, and separately a Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame inductee. On the night of 5 January 1975, the bulk carrier Lake Illawarra struck the Tasman Bridge, collapsing several pylons into the Derwent River and killing 12 people, five of them in cars that drove off the broken span in the dark. The disaster cut Hobart's eastern shore off from the city for years, reshaping the city's transport and politics. This is Part 1 of Bailey's cartoon response to the crisis.
