Jacob Bayly Chandler was born in Dover, England in 1822 and migrated to Tasmania in his early 20s, initially working on the Derwent, repairing whaleboats, but within four years operating his own boatyard at Battery Point. This book chronicles Chandler's personal and professional life as a boatbuilder - between 1843 and 1894 he built more than 140 vessels from skiffs to cutter yachts and steam ferries.
